In most cases, design really begins to shine when a kitchen renovation is in question. With the help of kitchen renovations, you can really transform the way your home looks and operates. Whether it be new wall colours, a backsplash replacement, brand new countertops or an upgraded sink, you can really improve the way people see your home.
One of the most drastic ways to transform your kitchen is with that of a cabinet redesign. With the wide range of different choices in regards to a cabinet’s colour & materials, you can add a certain mood/style to the space that ties every other aspect of the room together. Here at Joseph Kitchen and Bath, we want to explain how to create contrast in a kitchen by taking advantage of either light cabinets and dark cabinets.
Light Kitchen Cabinets
When you have a smaller kitchen and are looking for something more traditional and classic, light kitchen cabinets are usually the way to go. With the help of lighter kitchen cabinets, you can open up the space of a kitchen and make this area look larger than it actually is. This is due to the colour of the cabinets reflecting the light within the kitchen, whether it be from your actual kitchen lights or the outdoor lighting. Creating a more lively, energetic atmosphere, lighter kitchen cabinets make a space look clean and classy. Some great design features to pair with these types of cabinets include:
- Darker Hardware: If you want to create a subtle contrast to your kitchen with your light cabinets, consider swapping out your lighter coloured hardware for more darker equipment and tools. This will make them stand out in a room full of white, making it easier to locate certain tools and cook/bake more efficiently.
- Darker Kitchen Island: Kitchen islands are a great addition to any kitchen as they add a bit of luxury to this room. Regardless of what material you decide to use, if your cabinets are a lighter colour, consider making the countertop/cabinets of your kitchen island darker for some nice contrast. If you really want your kitchen to stand out, this is a good design choice. If you’re looking for something more uniform, soft and subtle, consider skipping on this project.
Dark Kitchen Cabinets
Do you have a larger kitchen and are looking to close up the space a little bit and make it look cozy? If so, dark kitchen cabinets are the way to go. In addition to this, dark cabinets (such as mahogany, dark espresso and black) tend to create a more luxurious, rich feel to one’s kitchen. Safe to say if you want your kitchen to look glamorous, this design option is the way to go. The only time we wouldn’t recommend these cabinets is if you have a smaller kitchen that needs to look larger. Some of the ways to amplify a kitchen with dark cabinets include:
- Stylish Backsplashes: If you’re looking to add contrast and want to do so in the best way possible, a light backsplash is probably your best bet. When you pair a light backsplash with darker cabinets, you get a beautiful contrast that makes your kitchen counters stand out/look more visible.
- Floors: While dark floors can look great in a kitchen, it can be a bit too overwhelming/dark if you decide to pair dark floors with dark cabinets. Instead, try pairing a medium toned/lighter tile with your dark cabinets. This will create contrast and make your floors look luxurious, pristine and modern.
