When it comes to properly styling your kitchen, one of the most looked at aspects of this space will undoubtedly be your kitchen cabinets (and specifically, the front of them). In many cases, the design choice you go with for this feature will make or break your kitchen, so it is always important that you are making the right decisions when it comes to tying your kitchen design together. To learn about the things to consider before choosing your kitchen cabinetry, check out the guide we here at Joseph Kitchen and Bath have offered below.
Door Style
In general, there are three main types of cabinet doors when it comes to kitchen design. These styles are known as flat panel, recessed panel or raised panel. The styles are pretty self-explanatory by looking at their name, but they all have a very significant effect on how your kitchen will look overall.
Flat panel doors are different from raised or recessed panel cabinets, as they offer no real frames or grooves and are quite two dimensional in nature. Making sure that the colour and the finish for these cabinets are perfect is vital for these cabinets to look good in your space. This is mainly because since they have no set style, they need to match your appliances/countertops/other kitchen features to look as though they fit in with the rest of your kitchen. These cabinets are perfect for kitchens that are either more contemporary or more modern/minimalist.
Recessed panel doors date back as far as the 1700’s, and were in almost every kitchen by the 1930’s. This style can work with either a contemporary kitchen or a traditional kitchen, offering versatility when you need it most. If you’re looking to go with a more transitional-styled kitchen, these cabinets will likely be just the thing you need.
Raised panel doors will almost always bring a traditional twist to your space. This cabinet door features a raised middle panel, creating a clean groove between the frame of your cabinet and its central panel. This depth helps push the style from that of the American colonial area, where raised cabinetry was a sign of exuberant wealth (as they were more pricey to build back in the day).
Colour & Finish
As we briefly mentioned in our paragraph about flat panel doors, the colour and finish you choose for your cabinets are crucial in order to tie the room together, often regardless of the type of cabinet you choose. While it is less important for recessed panel & raised panel doors (as they have a style profile of their own), if you want to maintain a uniform kitchen design this aspect is of utmost importance. There are two main ways to colour/tint your cabinets, and that is done with either stains or paint. Whereas stains will still show the texture of the cabinets wood, paint will cover it completely. This choice will all depend on what kind of style you are going for. If you desire a more rustic/old-timey style, we recommend stains. If you want something more classic/modern, paint is preferred. There is also a middle ground between these two colour/finish styles known as a glaze, where the paint removes the look of the wood but falls beautifully into the grooves and corners of your cabinetry, maintaining the best in texture and depth.
