There are many options to consider when choosing a kitchen sink when renovation your kitchen. Top mounting or undermounting? What material do you want the sink made of? Single, double, or triple bowl? Normal depth or an extra deep bowl? This is a personal preference and should be based on the type countertop you choose, and the type of tasks you will be using the sink for.
The first consideration is, how do you plan to mount the sink? Do you like the look of a topmount or undermount sink? Often this will be determined by the type countertop material used. Each style comes with its own set of pros and cons.
Pros and Cons
Topmount sinks are easier to install so the installation cost is less. This type of sink allows a little more storage space under the sink. Topmount sinks are more prone to dirt and grime buildup along the overlap lip.
Undermount sinks are best suited to solid materials such as granite or a solid plastic such as Corian. This style of sink is mounted to the underside of the countertop so clean up is easier making this type of sink more sanitary. Undermount sinks are harder to install so installation cost will be more and this type of sink may cost more depending on the material it is made of.
Type of Bowl
Again this is a matter of preference. Single, double, and triple bowls all have their own set of pros and cons.
Single Bowl Sink
A single bowl is a great choice if you have a dishwasher and will be using the sink for single tasks. If you need space for numerous tasks at one time a multi bowl choice would be a better option.
Double Bowl Sink
A double bowl sink is ideal for washing dishes if you don’t have a dishwasher or if you have fragile dishes or glassware that can’t be washed in a dishwasher. It is ideal if you regularly carry out multiple tasks at the sink while cooking.
Double Bowl sinks are available in two styles. The first has bowls of equal size and the second has one bowl that is larger than the other, usually a 60/40 split. This type of sink is great for soaking larger dishes and pots and pans that don’t fit in a normal double sink.
Triple Bowl Sinks
Triple bowl sinks offer the user multi-purpose function. The two larger bowls can be used for washing dishes or food prep while the smaller middle sink is often used for a garbage disposal. This type of sink is great for keeping cleaning, food prep, and waste separated. With a triple bowl sink the size of the two larger bowls will be smaller than either type of double bowl sink. This type of sink is the least popular of the three choices.
