What is MDF Wood?
Medium-Density Fiberboard is a composite material made up of pieces of wood and wood fibers. These fibers are then bonded together with a resin adhesive or a wax adhesive depending on the brand. The outer layer is then given a decorative layer of veneer. While it is similar to plywood, it is much denser and entirely sturdier.
The benefit of using MDF for your bathroom is mainly its affordability. Though not as sturdy or reliable as solid wood, it is a good choice for those who live in less humid climates. It is also a common choice for those looking to remodel on a tight budget. MDF board though sturdy doesn’t perform as well in wet areas. As a result, it is much better to use them in places that are not in contact with water such as in the kitchen or bedroom.
Solid Wood
Solid wood cabinets and vanities cover two main types of wood. First there is the solid hardwood, which is the sturdiest. The second choice is natural solid hardwood which is sturdy, but can shrink and expands along with the weather. Solid hardwood is made from pure wood pulp, while solid natural hardwood is actual planks directly from the tree. Both are quality options, though only one will retain its shape regardless of the weather. For bathroom areas, solid hardwood is more suitable since it doesn’t change with the weather, while solid natural hardwood will change similar to MDF wood.
Which Material is Best in Humid Conditions?
The amount of humidity in your area and your bathroom will play a critical role in your vanity material choices. Bathroom cabinets when properly cared for can last virtually forever. Real wood will always absorb humidity which can cause warping over time. Even if you have ventilation, the nature of the wood will cause it to change shape as it ages.
MDF won’t change shape like real wood but they can get damaged if water penetrates the surface. If your bathroom is well ventilated and your cabinets have been properly sealed, MDF can be used without becoming damaged.
Solid hardwood has been crafted to be able to resist the expansion that comes with humidity. Even if it comes in contact with water directly it won’t swell or warp like MDF. While it will work effectively in moist environments, dry environments can cause is to crack or splinter over time.
Cost & Visual Appearance
All forms are crafted to be visually appealing. Natural wood has a solid rich texture while MDF simply mimics the same look. Price-wise, solid natural wood will cost the most, followed by solid wood, and finally MDF wood. If you have room in your budget, the best choice for longevity and appearance is a solid hardwood vanity.
